Super Screener players have thrilling Ky. Derby success

It was the thrilling finish that we were all hoping for in the Kentucky Derby. Sovereignty and Journalism met up in the stretch and dueled for a good portion of it before the 8-1 Bill Mott trainee drew away from the 3-1 post time favorite.

Rushing up for third was Baeza who looked strongest of all as he galloped past the top pair following the wire, looking like a great candidate for the Belmont Stakes.

Perhaps suffering the worst trip of all was Final Gambit who got squeezed back after the start leaving him last of the 19 runners. He then fanned 10 wide into the stretch before commencing a long, persistent drive to get up for fourth as a Super Screener Top Long Shot pick.

Here’s the official chart from the race:

From the 19 horses, the Super Screener had come up with four A horses. From that select group came the top three finishers in the race with a Top Long Shot pick completing the superfecta.

Note the pace of the race. The Super Screener called for a very fast pace, which is what materialized, with the prediction coming within a fifth of a second of the actual splits. Getting the pace right, as we do year after year, is a key contributor to the success of the Super Screener scoring models.

Here’s some of what the Super Screener had to say about the winner, Sovereignty:

Form Cycle Analysis results are indicating that no other horse in this field will launch a bigger move forward than this Into Mischief colt. A boomerang pattern is now setting up, so in this next start look for at least a six-point move forward as he snaps back to a new top. He'll sit well off the pace but will come loaded into the stretch with plenty of reserve energy mowing down runners one-by-one on his way to the wire as he gets far more pace and the longer stretch he needs for his best effort. He is the top horse exiting the Florida-based preps and is a key player to hit the exotics while offering plenty of value.

Few gave Final Gambit any chance given he had never run on dirt. However, from the 12 long shots in the Kentucky Derby, this was the second-highest-scoring horse coming out of the proprietary Super Screener Top Long shot model. Here’s some other information we shared coming into the race:

Despite a troubled start in the Jeff Ruby Steaks this colt gained ground into the moderate pace and then unfurled a lethal late kick that resulted in producing a huge BRIS Late Pace figure of 112 and a final Speed Rating figure of 101. In the end, if the pace is hot enough in the Kentucky Derby it would be no surprise that this horse would get up into the exotics at a massive price. Exclude at your own risk… top long shot player.

When it came to the suggested wagers for the race, the Super Screener delivered with several tickets including the following:

Now it is on to the Preakness Stakes where we may very well see a rematch between Sovereignty and Journalism and a decent size field of about 10 runners. We’ll have that all analyzed for you as we look forward to another strong performance by the Super Screener.
