Super Screener: 15-1 shot offers big value in Summer Stakes
Saturday’s card at Woodbine Race Course in Canada features four stakes including three automatic qualifiers to the Breeders Cup.
The Summer Stakes (G1) awards the winner a fees-paid berth to the Juvenile Turf, while the Natalma Stakes (G1) does likewise for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Finally, the Woodbine Mile (G1) provides the winner with a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
This week’s Super Screener offers a heavy dose of Woodbine, plus the Iroquois (G3) and Pocahontas (G3) for 2-year-olds at Churchill Downs. Note the Iroquois and Pocahontas are the first point-paying preps on the road to next year’s Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, respectively.
In the Summer Stakes, a field of seven is set to go one mile on turf. Mysterious Night, a Group 3 winner in Europe for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby, is the 6-5 morning-line favorite for her North American debut.
As for Super Screener, it has tabbed 15-1 shot Ninetyfour Expos as its “top win contender” and “top long shot.”
Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Ninetyfour Expos dominated Woodbine maidens by 8 1/2 lengths when graduating over Woodbine’s synthetic track in May. Then after nearly three months away, the Outwork colt returned in the 6 1/2-furlong Soaring Free Stakes on turf at Woodbine and was beaten less than two lengths after attending a lively pace.
From Super Screener: “This colt really needed that last race…it was a wise move by Casse to rest him off that explosive maiden win…No other horse in the field projects to move forward more than this colt. He’ll be aided by the fact that he’ll control the pace this time on a lone lead…The risk/reward value proposition is highly favorable.”
