Sunday works: Sovereignty builds toward Oaklawn Handicap
Reigning horse of the year Sovereignty worked a half-mile in 49.64 seconds Sunday at Payson Park as he builds toward a return in the $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap (G2) on April 18.
It was the third officially timed workout for the 4-year-old, who has not raced since his 10-length victory in the Travers Stakes (G1) on Aug. 23. A fever forced him to miss the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Under exercise rider Jimmy Quispe, Sovereignty started a length behind stablemate Royal Majesty and finished a length in front, galloping out five furlongs in 1:03.88 over a good track.
Trainer Bill Mott said Sovereignty looked great in the move but noted the horse would need six to eight works before making his return. The son of Into Mischief came back to Mott at Payson Park in early January after spending about seven weeks at Keeneland following his Breeders' Cup setback.
The three-time Grade 1 winner captured the Travers at Saratoga, posting a 115 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form. He won the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on June 7 and the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3.
Sovereignty has a record of 9: 6-2-0 with earnings of $5,835,300 for owner Godolphin.
