Sunday works: British Isles sharp as Gold Cup looms

Big 'Cap winner British Isles worked a sharp five furlongs at Santa Anita on Sunday for trainer Richard Baltas as he points to the Grade 2 Hollywood Gold Cup on May 25. Multiple Grade 1 winner Formidable Man and El Potente also worked five furlongs, both candidates for the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile on the same card.

British Isles covered the distance in 59.8 seconds, the fifth-fastest of 63 works at five furlongs. The 6-year-old horse by Justify won the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) by 4 1/2 lengths on March 7 before finishing sixth in the Ben Ali (G3) on April 18 at Keeneland.

Formidable Man, trained by Michael McCarthy, went five furlongs on the main track in 1:00.2. The 6-year-old horse by City of Light has not started since finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Mile on Nov. 1.

El Potente worked five furlongs on the synthetic training track in 1:03.4. Trained by Dan Blacker, the 7-year-old horse by Temple City most recently finished second as the favorite in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G2) on March 7.

Neat (Constitution), a Grade 2 winner (2024 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame), worked four furlongs in 50.2 at Belmont Park on Sunday morning. It was the 35th fastest of 55 works at the distance. This is his first work since his last race. In his last start, he placed 11th in the Henry Clark going 1 mile on the turf at Laurel Park on April 18 for trainer Rob Atras.
