Sunday tab: See Flightline’s latest work, read about 15 more
With his lopsided victory on opening day still resonating at Santa Anita, Flightline continued preparations for his 4-year-old debut next month.
According to the track work tab, the 11 1/2-length winner of the Grade 1, $300,000 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26 was clocked at 48.0 seconds going four furlongs on the main track Sunday morning for trainer John Sadler.
A subsequent news release said Flightline went the half-mile in 47.8 seconds under the ride of assistant trainer Juan Leyva. A Tweet from West Point Thoroughbreds, a partner in Flightline, declared it “a bullet,” although the work tab credited that to Hear My Prayer’s 46.8-second clocking.
“He went very well, looked super, as good as he’s ever looked, going a half-mile in 47-and-4 and out (five furlongs) in a minute flat, effortlessly,” Sadler told Santa Anita’s Ed Golden. “We’re right on track for the San Carlos (G2).”
That is the seven-furlong, $200,000 race in which Flightline is expected to put his 3-for-3 record to the test March 5 at Santa Anita. The Met Mile (G1) in June at Belmont Park and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November at Keeneland are the long-term targets for the $1 million Tapit colt owned primarily by Hronis Racing.
