Summertime Oaks: Baffert's promising filly Mizumi returns

Promising debut winner Mizumi trained by Bob Baffert; Bank Shot, third in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks, and Marjoram, a Grade 3 winner on turf, will meet in a field of seven set for the $100,000 Summertime Oaks (G3) at 1 1/16 miles Saturday at Santa Anita.

Mizumi is a daughter of Justify owned by Baoma Corp. In her debut going 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on May 2, Mizumi raced up on the pace and then finished best of all to win by 1 1/2 lengths. She has since had a pair of quick works for Baffert. Mizumi will have Juan Hernandez aboard for her stakes and two-turn debut.

It’s been a productive winter and spring season at Santa Anita for Bank Shot, who is trained by Ryan Hanson for owner WSS Racing. After breaking her maiden on Jan. 2 at The Great Race Place, Bank Shot subsequently was third in the Las Virgenes Stakes and runner-up in the Santa Ysabel (G3) before her effort in the Santa Anita Oaks on April 4. The daughter of Game Winner will be ridden by Adrian Escobedo.

Marjoram, trained by Michael McCarthy for Juddmonte, won the Señorita (G3) sprinting on the hillside turf course May 9. The daughter of Quality Road has also won on dirt. In her debut in November, which came on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs, Marjoram rallied from the rear of the field to prevail by three-quarters of a length. On Saturday she’ll be ridden by Emisael Jaramillo for the first time.
