Sugarinthemorning Headlines Fleet Treat

Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally is No. 1 all-time at Del Mar for wins with 434 and No. 3 for stakes victories with 73. A victory by Sugarinthemorning in Saturday’s $100,000 Fleet Treat Stakes would move McAnally into a tie for second with Charlie Whittingham on the stakes list behind only Bob Baffert’s 90.

Sugarinthemorning faces four rivals in the 7-furlong test for 3-year-old California-bred fillies. A daughter of Candy Ride, whom McAnally trained to victory in the 2003 Pacific Classic, Sugarinthemorning has four wins in eight career starts with earnings of $167,834. Her last start was a 1 ½-length score in the Manhattan Beach stakes at Hollywood Park on June 18.

“She’s been training well, it’s a Cal-bred race and we’ve been waiting for it,” McAnally said Thursday morning. “She does better with space between her races.”

Sugarinthemorning notched a racing debut victory on August 10, 2010 at Del Mar and went straight to the Del Mar Debutante and a sixth-place finish. The filly, owned by Weissman and Clement, was raised at Jenny Craig’s nearby Rancho Paseana.

“I saw her in the field at Rancho Paseana when she wasn’t very old and I liked her right away,” McAnally said.
