Suddenbreakingnews Will Probably Work This Weekend
Suddenbreakingnews will probably work this weekend at Oaklawn in preparation for the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 19 at Oaklawn, trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel said Friday morning. He was a last-to-first winner of the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) Feb. 15 at Oaklawn in his last start.
Suddenbreakingnews breezed an easy half-mile in :51.20 Saturday at Oaklawn.
“Just let him stretch his legs a little bit,” Von Hemel said. “We’ll have to be a little more serious this week, I’m sure.”
Trainer Ron Moquett of Hot Springs said Southwest runner-up Whitmore will probably breeze this weekend at Oaklawn in preparation for the Rebel.
Another projected Rebel starter, Mo for the Money, is scheduled to work Sunday at Oaklawn, trainer Tony Dutrow said Fridaymorning.
Mo for the Money was a powerful entry-level allowance winner sprinting Feb. 7 at Oaklawn. The Rebel will be his two-turn debut.
Back to Work
Multiple stakes winner Discreetness will work between the third and fourth races Friday at Oaklawn, trainer Jinks Fires of Hot Springs said. The colt is pointing for the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 19 at Oaklawn, Fires said.
Fires said his son-in-law, Jon Court, also the regular rider of Discreetness, will breeze the colt 5 furlongs in company with a stablemate.
“He’s a pretty laid back horse, so I want to work him with another horse,” Fires said before training hours Friday morning.
Fires had planned to breeze Discreetness Wednesday, but postponed the work because of track conditions.
Friday’s scheduled work will be the first for Discreetness since he finished seventh in the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) Feb. 15 at Oaklawn. Prior to that race, he won the $250,000 Springboard Mile Dec. 13 at Remington Park, and, in his 3-year-old debut, the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 18 at Oaklawn.
Projected Rebel starter Cutacorner recorded a bullet 5-furlong work (:59.80) over a fast track Friday morning at Oaklawn for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg. Cutacorner, a troubled ninth in the Southwest, breezed after the break under Alex Birzer.
