Street Spice to LSU for Bone Scan
The late Jim Tafel’s Street Spice, who was vanned off after winning Sunday’s featured allowance at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots at odds of 7-1, is headed to Louisiana State University’s veterinary hospital for a bone scan, according to trainer Greg Geier. A 5-year-old son of Tafel’s champion and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, the bay gelding was pulled up by jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. at approximately the 6½-furlong pole during the gallop out. The game multiple stakes-placed Kentucky-bred had just won his fourth career race and first since October of 2013 for his connections. “He’s walking fine now, so we’re going to take him to LSU to get a bone scan and make sure nothing is broken up on the leg – everything else on him is fine,” Geier reported. “He took a funny step, so (Hernandez) wanted to make sure and play it safe. We’ll have to wait and see if he can return after this. If everything is fine, we’ll bring him back.” Geier also took the time to update us on his other 5-year-old stakes horse, Fordubai. Last seen finishing a game second in the Listed $75,000 Louisiana Stakes, the nine-time stakes-placed son of E Dubai is preparing for a return in the Grade III $125,000 Mineshaft Handicap – a race in which he finished third last year. On Sunday, the dark bay Kentucky-bred worked a strong half-mile in :48.60 – good for third-best of 90 moves at the distance.
“He worked great the other day and will be in the Mineshaft,” Geier said. “We’re on the right track with him.”
