Street Chief Breaks Maiden in Record-Setting Time
Luis Saez’s cousin Gabriel Saez also turned in a masterful ride aboard Street Chief ($9) in the ninth race, a 1 3/16-mile turf test for 4-year-olds and up. Saez made the winning move approaching the far turn, sending the son of Street Sense through an opening along the inside to grab the lead he would never relinquish. The Buff Bradley-trained 4-year-old withstood a stretch-long challenge by favored Pure Spirit to score a three-quarters of a length.decision while setting a course record with a clocking of 1:54.04, eclipsing the standard of 1:55.51 set by Union Prayer on Dec. 23.
“Gabe just rode him so well. He made the winning move around the five-eighths pole,” said Bradley, who owns Street Chief in partnership with Stephen Crawford and Edna Fischer.
Street Chief was gelded after his last start.
“He was always classy, always did things right, but we thought his testicle were bothering him since last fall,” said Bradley, whose trainee had shown promise but came up empty in 13 previous starts. “We never pinpointed it for sure, but since then he’s been awesome.”
Who’s Hot: Jockey Paco Lopez made a pair of visits to the winner’s circle with Flashy Brass ($6) in the first and Quite Kitten ($4.40) in the eighth.
