Nine for nine is something to brag about, whether it’s Little League or The Bigs. But when Stopshoppingdebbie runs in Saturday’s Grade III, $100,000 L.A. Woman Stakes for fillies and mares, 3 and up, it could reveal whether she’s the real deal or not.
The 4-year-old daughter of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin (2007-2008) has not lost in nine career starts, but all have come at Emerald Downs in Washington. Trainer Tom Wenzel is hopeful Stopshoppingdebbie can prove she belongs here and move on to the Breeders’ Cup.
“If we want to run in the Breeders’ Cup, we felt she’d have to prove herself here first,” said Wenzel, who trains the filly for Northwest Farms. “If she does well, we would look at either the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint or the Distaff.
“She’s run well at Emerald Downs, either on the pace or close to it. She’ll face some pretty good fillies here Sunday, but she beat some pretty solid fillies at Emerald Downs. We’re excited to see how she performs. Even good horses have a bad race once in a while, but so far, she’s done everything right.”
The field for the L.A. Woman, race four of 10: Top Kisser, Elvis Trujillo, 5-2; Uzziel, Tyler Baze, 5-1; Maker Or Breaker, Martin Garcia, 9-2; Stopshoppingdebbie, Rocco Bowen, 7-2; Tribal Gal, Rafael Bejarano, 7-2; and My Happy Face, Joe Talamo, 3-1.
