Stonestreet to race $2.4 million mare Mia Mischief in 2020
After securing Grade 1 winner Mia Mischief on Tuesday night at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, Stonestreet Farm’s Barbara Banke sought out a conversation with Steve Asmussen.
It turns out this fast filly’s racing career isn’t over.
Following a season in which Mia Mischief won four of eight starts, including the Humana Distaff (G1) at Churchill Downs, she’ll return to Asmussen’s shed row to target a 2020 campaign.
Then, Banke said, “I have a certain date in mind for her when she finishes her career.”
That no doubt means pairing the daughter of Into Mischief with her top sire, Curlin, the two-time Horse of the Year Asmussen also conditioned for Stonestreet.
“We hope to get a stallion prospect out it,” Banke said of the pairing.
Mia Mischief was fresh off the track and into the sale having won Churchill’s Dream Supreme Stakes last Friday. She also defeated the eventual Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner and likely division champion Covfefe over the summer in the Roxelana Overnight Stakes, also under the Twin Spires.
Mia Mischief formerly raced for Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, longtime clients of Asmussen’s, along with Heider Family Stables and Madaket Stables.
“Steve told us he thought she was in good shape,” Banke said. “Of course, we’ll go over her with a fine-tooth comb and make sure that she’s happy and healthy and everything like that.”
"She’s coming off one of her best numbers lifetime," added Brad Weisbord of consignor Elite Sales. "Hopefully Steve will get her back and we’ll get to root for her next year because she’s a darling. She’s been a wonderful filly for us.”
And so continues a trend of high-class mares returning to the races in 2020. The likes of Midnight Bisou, Bellafina and Got Stormy were all pulled from Tuesday night’s sale in favor of remaining in training.
“I think it’s good because it gives people a horse to follow,” Banke said. “If they’ve been a fan, they can continue to be a fan.”
