Stiffed Unleashes Furious Run in Monmouth Beach
A season-high crowd of 26,268 were on hand to see Holy Crest Farm’s Stiffed unleash a furious stretch rally and post a half-length victory in the $75,000 Monmouth Beach Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday.
Trained by John Mazza, Stiffed sat last up the backstretch before putting in a sustained rally to run by post-time favorite Got Lucky in the shadow of the wire. The time for the mile and 70 yards over a fast main track was 1:41 1/5. Stiffed, dismissed at the betting windows, returned $71.60, $21.20 and $8.40 after scoring her second straight victory. Got Lucky completed the $338.80 exacta and paid $3.80 and $2.80. It was nearly seven lengths back to Amblin Easy, who paid $7 to show.
“I wasn’t too worried when she was a little slow coming out of the gate,” said winning jockey Gabriel Saez. “The fractions were quick up front, but we were comfortable far off the lead. That’s just how she runs. She answered the call at the top of the stretch perfectly.”
A 4-year-old filly by Stephen Got Even from the Silver Deputy mare High Noon Nellie, Stiffed was bred in New Jersey by her owners. She now sports a lifetime
record of 4-0-2 from ten starts.
