Stewart considering Givemeaminit for Preakness 2018
Trainer Dallas Stewart on Tuesday confirmed he's considering Givemeaminit as a challenger to Justify in the 2018 Preakness Stakes.
The Louisiana-bred son of Star Guitar finished third in last Saturday's sloppy running of the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile and would measure up as a longshot May 19 at Pimlico. But Stewart has excelled in that role before, saddling 28-1 shot Tale of Verve for a runner-up finish in the 2015 Preakness.
As of now, Stewart said he's "just thinking about" running the colt in a field that could also include Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic and Quip, the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby winner.
Purchased for a bargain $20,000, Givemeaminit has earned in excess of $280,000 by cashing checks in races such as the Grade 1 Hopeful (third) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (fourth) at age 2. Dropped back into the maiden special weight ranks, he scored his first victory Jan. 28 at seventh asking at Fair Grounds.
Stewart tried Givemeaminit in the Grade 2 Risen Star and Louisiana Derby, in which his better finish was fourth, leaving him outside of qualifying for the Kentucky Derby. But a trainer known for hitting the board with high-priced colts could be looking to do so again in the Preakness.
