Stewards fine, suspend Moore for Breeders’ Cup crop violation
Santa Anita stewards have suspended jockey Ryan Moore for one day and fined him $20,800 for a crop violation for his winning ride on Auguste Rodin in the Breeders' Cup Turf on Nov. 4.
The Santa Anita stewards originally levied the suspension and fine on Nov. 5, a day after the race. They cited Moore for using the riding crop seven times during the race, one time over the limit. Moore appealed the ruling to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, a ruling that was unsuccessful according to a Sunday ruling reinstating the suspension and fine. The reinstatement was previously reported by Steve Andersen of Daily Racing Form.
Under HISA rules, Moore's crop violation is a class 3 violation, the least severe category. A class 3 violation covers jockeys using the crop one to three times over the limit. Fines in this category amount to $250 or 10 percent of a jockey's share of the purse, whichever is greater. The $20,800 fine is 10 percent of Moore's $208,000 share of the Breeders' Cup Turf purse. A class 3 violation does not affect the race's finish order or base purse distribution.
Moore will serve his suspension Sunday. Though he can ride in designated races, he is not currently named to ride any horses on Sunday. Moore is named to ride a pair of horses Saturday in stakes races in Qatar for trainer Aidan O'Brien. He rides Cairo in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup and Point Lonsdale in the H H The Amir Trophy (G3).
