Gary Stevens, a Hall of Fame jockey who’s been based in Southern California, changed circuits this winter to Oaklawn Park. And instead of returning to California, the Daily Racing Form reports Stevens will ride at Keeneland, Churchill Downs and Saratoga this spring and summer.
“That’s the plan,”
Stevens will remain at Oaklawn through the end of the meet, which is April 14. Keeneland, where Stevens has not been based since 2005, opens April 6. The jockey said he has a few riding arrangements at the Lexington track before Oaklawn ends.
This winter is the first full season Stevens has spent at Oaklawn. He’s the fifth-leading rider this meet with 19 wins from 118 starts entering Friday. He is also fourth in earnings with $1,136,267. Stevens has also teamed with Kentucky-based trainers, including Brad Cox. The pair has won seven of 25 starts together.
Stevens picked up wins aboard Streamline in the Grade 3 Bayakoa Stakes, and he'll ride Risen Star (G2) winner Bravazo in Saturday's Louisiana Derby. the Hall of Famer also has the mount on Kentucky Oaks hopeful Sassy Sienna.
