State of Readiness is euthanized after Saratoga injury
State of Readiness was euthanized Friday after sustaining multiple inoperable fractures to his right hind during the running of Race 10 at Saratoga. Jockey Joel Rosario pulled up the Charlton Baker-trained horse, and on-track veterinarians immediately attended to the injured runner before recommending euthanasia.
Earlier during Race 8, Bunny Hunny was pulled up by Rosario, who felt the horse was not traveling well. New York Racing Association veterinarians found no initial sign of injury, and the horse was transported via equine ambulance to the barn area for further evaluation.
In the same race, Rock Harbor fell in the stretch run and unseated jockey Luis Rivera Jr., who was transported to Saratoga Hospital for examination of his left leg and hip. Rock Harbor walked onto the equine ambulance with assistance and was transported to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital for examination and treatment of a left front injury.
The incidents bring the total equine fatalities to five since the summer meet began July 10, with three occurring during racing and two during training. The previous racing fatalities were Setting Sun and Aterradora. National Secret and Dazzle d'Oro died during training.
