Starting Over, the graded-stakes-winning 8-year-old gelding who was hurt in the Grade 2 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park, was euthanized because of the injury he suffered to his right-hind fetlock.

“He did not make it,” trainer Brittany Russell said in a text message to Horse Racing Nation on Sunday morning. “We are devastated.”

Racing in seventh place, Starting Over was pulled up by jockey Umberto Rispoli as he was making the third turn in the 1 3/8-mile race on firm turf. The son of Liam’s Map was loaded onto an equine ambulance and taken to the backside for further examination and treatment.

Bred by George Strawbridge Jr. in Kentucky, Starting Over was owned by Nice Guys Stables through a private purchase. He had a record of 28: 5-4-5 and earnings of $570,145. His biggest win came in the 2024 Mac Diarmida at Gulfstream Park, where he went off at 11-1 while still in the care of trainer Mike Maker.

Starting Over carried odds of 24-1 in the United Nations.
