Starship Jubilee beats the Euros in Woodbine's E. P. Taylor
Faced with a number of European invaders, Woodbine-based Starship Jubilee held down the fort to win Saturday’s Grade 1, $600,000 E. P. Taylor Stakes, the undercard feature for fillies and mares on Canadian International day.
Under jockey Luis Contreras, the 6-year-old daughter of Indy Wind stalked outside of favored Red Tea until putting a head in front off the turn. From there, she drove on to win as Durance and Platane hit the wire together about a length behind.
The final time for the Kevin Attard trainee was 2:03.29 for 1 1/4 miles on turf.
"I’ve been fortunate to make some good claims in my career but… she’s the pinnacle right now," Attard said. "This is my first Grade 1 win, and I want to thank Adam and Bonnie of Blue Heaven Farm for buying her and allowing me to train her.”
Now, how about thinking bigger?
“It might be on the table now,” Attard said of the Breeders' Cup, with the Filly & Mare Turf set for Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park.
Starship Jubilee received a clean, outside trip, sitting off fractions of 26.50 for the opening quarter mile, 52.07 for the half and 1:17.34 for three-quarters of a mile.
A Florida-bred runner for Blue Heaven Farm, which acquired the mare this season and left her in Attard's care, Starship Jubilee entered off a victory in the Sept. 14 Canadian Stakes (G2), which she also won in 2018. Starship Jubilee improved to 14-4-3 in 30 starts.
"This filly came out really well trained and she was amazing today," Contreras said. "She always gives me something no matter what at the end and I just was so comfortable on the last turn. When I saw no one was coming close to us on the front end, I was just waiting for the stretch to make a run and she just exploded.”
Imperial Charm ran fourth in the E. P. Taylor field of 10.
