Square Eddie's Success at Stud Pleases O'Neill

Two-year-old fillies Sprouts and Eddies Curl, the 1-2 finishers in Friday’s CTBA Stakes for trainer Edward Freeman and owner J. Paul Reddam are both first-crop progeny of Square Eddie. Imported by Reddam from England in the fall of 2008 as a 2-year-old, Square Eddie was  runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile  to Midshipman, the Del Mar Futurity winner who went on to be accorded  the Eclipse in the Juvenile category.

Sent to stud at the Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall in early 2010,  Square Eddie got his first stakes win with Sprouts in the $100,250 Cinderella Stakes on June 15 at Hollywood Park. The performance of Sprouts and Eddies Curl further enhances the reputation of Square Eddie as a sire.

“That’s so exciting, I’m happy for everybody,” said Doug O’Neill, who trained Square Eddie during his racing career for major client Reddam. “It’s really unbelievable how good those Square Eddies (progeny) have been.”

But not entirely surprising.

“He was a brilliant horse,” O’Neill said. “He could sprint or go two turns and he had a great mind. You never know what’s going to happen when they go to stud, and it’s early for him, but it’s great to see the success.”
