Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Awesome Patriot sires first winner

Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Awesome Patriot, a stakes-winning son of Awesome Again and full brother to Preakness winner Oxbow, sired his first winner on Wednesday when 2-year-old filly Amberspatriot impressively won at first asking in a $60,000 Maiden Special Weight race at Keeneland.

 

Bet down to 2-1 for her debut, the bay filly rallied professionally to prove best over a field of nine, running 4 ½ furlongs in 52.59 over a fast local main track at Keeneland. Trained by John Hancock, Amberspatriot earned $36,000 for the win for owners Donna Hancock and Charles Brown.

 

Amberspatriot was bred in Kentucky by Jim & Pam Robinson’s Brandywine Farm, and is out of the Limehouse mare Starkey.

 

A $350,000 yearling, Awesome Patriot is out of the mare Tizamazing, a $1 million yearling herself and full sister to two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) champion and leading sire Tiznow. Awesome Patriot’s immediate family includes Grade 1 winner Paynter, also by Awesome Again.

 

On the track, Awesome Patriot won his debut as a 2-year-old at Hollywood Park and became graded stakes-placed in the Hollywood Prevue S. (G3). As a 3-year-old, he won the Alydar S. at Hollywood.
