Speed figures: These are Thursday's fastest horses

Mo Quality posted Thursday's highest Horse Racing Nation speed figure, a 140, when winning a first-level allowance optional claiming race at 6 1/2 furlongs on the Tapeta at Turfway Park. The 4-year-old Mo Town colt, trained by Christopher Davis, battled on the pace before clearing late to win by 1 3/4 lengths as the 3-1 favorite. It was his second win in nine starts, and he is also stakes-placed by virtue of a runner-up finish to Coal Battle in the Smarty Jones last year at Oaklawn.

Original Sin earned a 126 HRN speed figure when he won a first-level allowance going 1 1/16 miles on the Fair Grounds dirt. The 4-year-old Curlin colt chased last of five early but sustained a rally and got up to win by a length as the 7-2 fourth choice in the field. Trained by Brendan Walsh, Original Sin has won twice in five career starts.

Sculcos Folly completed Thursday's top three with a 122 HRN speed figure at Aqueduct in a starter-optional claiming sprint at six furlongs on the dirt. The 3-year-old Redesdale colt, trained by Rick Dutrow, led at every call and won by 9 3/4 lengths as the 8-5 second choice of seven. The victory was his third in five career starts.

Fastest maiden winners

Lotta Alpha posted the day's highest figure among maiden winners with a 121 at Turfway Park. The John Servis trainee rallied up the fence to win the 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight by 2 3/4 lengths at 10-1 odds in a field of 11. She graduated in her sixth career start, her second on the Tapeta at Turfway. Lotta Alpha is a 3-year-old filly by McKinzie out of the winning Tapit mare Ygritte, who is herself a daughter of multiple graded-stakes winner and Canada champion Irish Mission. All three of Ygritte's starters are winners including the Candy Ride mare Youknownothing, a two-time winner who finished second in the Bewitch (G3) at Keeneland last year.

Running On Time impressed with a 109 HRN figure at Gulfstream Park in a maiden claiming race at Gulfstream Park. The race was run at a mile and 70 yards on Tapeta after being take off the grass. Running On Time, the 3-5 favorite in a field of nine, attended the pace before drawing clear to win by 8 3/4 lengths. Trained by Jose D'Angelo into the race, he was claimed for $35,000 to the barn of Michael De Paulo out of it. Running On Time is a 3-year-old colt by American Pharoah out of Dayatthespa, a champion grass mare and Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner who earned almost $2.29 million on the track. Dayatthespa has two winners from three starters; the other is Spaliday, a More Than Ready daughter who has won four times including in the 2024 Sands Point (G2).

A. P.'s Girl earned a 109 HRN speed figure at Fair Grounds on Friday, winning a maiden special weight at 1 1/16 miles on dirt in her sixth career start. The Peter Eurton trainee raced in last of eight early but sustained a rally, took over in the lane, and held to win by 1 3/4 lengths at 9-1 odds. A. P.'s Girl is a 3-year-old daughter of Honor A. P. out of March X Press, a stakes-winning Shanghai Bobby mare. March X Press has produced two winners from three starters. The other winner is Fort Bragg, whose five victories include a score in the 2024 Dwyer (G3).

About HRN speed figures

HRN speed figures are AI-generated using HRN's proprietary machine-learning algorithms. Although they involve less human input than other speed figures, we see that as a plus as human adjustments often knock down surprisingly good performances to match expectations. HRN speed figures were launched in December 2024, and our expectation is also that the AI-generated speed figures will continuously get better over time.

The HRN speed figure scale goes from 1 to 160. Part of the reason for this higher scale is this helps us avoid assigning a speed figure of zero. For some products, in weaker races, half the field or more may get a speed figure of zero, which leads to inaccuracy and defeats the purpose of speed figures.

Because the HRN speed figures are based on machine learning, as we improve our models we can compute the numbers historically.
