Speed figures: Messier's Santa Anita romp tops list of 11
Messier's 15-length romp in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita put him squarely at the top of the weekend's fastest runners.
In fact, his 103 Beyer Speed Figure is the highest by a 3-year-old this year, according to the Daily Racing Form.
His stablemate in Bob Baffert's barn, the filly Adare Manor, scored a 13-length win in the Las Virgenes (G3) at the same track. Because of Churchill Downs' ban on Baffert, neither earned Kentucky Derby or Oaks qualifying points for the effort.
Messier also earned a 104 Brisnet rating and a 127 TimeformUS Speed Figure for covering the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.84.
Another Baffert horse, Merneith, had an impressive win in the Santa Monica (G2), garnering a 102 Beyer and 100 Brisnet rating.
Among other 3-year-olds, White Abarrio earned a 97 from both Beyer and Brisnet and a 106 from TimeformUS.
