Trainer Ben Colebrook was still grinning widely Saturday morning, the day after he sent out Sparkling Review to win the $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View (G1) by 2¾ lengths under Julien Leparoux. The performance came in the filly’s stakes debut and gave Colebrook the first stakes win of his career just shy of a year since he won his first race, also at Keeneland.
Sparkling Review, a 3-year-old daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, races for breeder Edward A. Selzter and Beverly S. Anderson. She has won three consecutive races, all on the turf.
“She came out of the race great,” Colebrook said. “The next logical spot would be the stakes at Churchill, the Mrs. Revere (G2), but I’ve gotta talk to the owners and see how she trains between now and then.”
The Mrs. Revere, on Nov. 15, is at the same 1 1/16-mile distance as the Pin Oak Valley View.
Sparkling Review, who was 7-1 for the Pin Oak Valley View, delivered a popular victory at Keeneland, where Colebrook, 36, first galloped horses when he was a teenager. The graduate of the University of Kentucky was a Keeneland assistant to trainer Christophe Clement, who watched the race in New York and called him with congratulations. Colebrook sent out one starter in 2012, had three wins from 18 starts last year and this year has won 18 races from 131 starts with earnings of $805,564.
He now has about 40 horses in training, including 25 at Keeneland.
“Well I’d better keep moving,” he said. “I have three in today.”
