Souper Colossal Tries to Stay Perfect at Monmouth
Live Oak Plantation’s Souper Colossal looks to remain undefeated at Monmouth Park and goes for two consecutive wins on the turf to start 2015 in Sunday’s $60,000 Select Stakes going five and a half furlongs.
“His pedigree favors the turf,” said trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. “He ran great on the turf last time out and is ready to go for Sunday.”
In his first outing of 2015, Souper Colossal sat right off the pace before taking the lead at the top of the stretch and storming home to win the Texas Glitter Stakes at Gulfstream Park in February by a length and a half for his first career win on the turf.
The 3-year old colt by War Front out of the Kingmambo mare Soaring Emotions has worked five times at Monmouth since the beginning of May. His latest work came on June 5 as he went five furlongs over the fast main track in 1:01 2/5, which was the eighth fastest out of 26 horses that went five furlongs on that day.
Most of the success in Souper Colossal’s career has come at Monmouth Park. After breaking his maiden in his first career start at Monmouth, he continued his two-year-old campaign with wins in last year’s Tyro and Sapling, both coming over the main track.
His wins at Monmouth paved the way to a start in the Breeders Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, where he faced three eventual Kentucky Derby starters (Mr. Z, Carpe Diem, and Upstart), finishing seventh behind winner Texas Red.
Souper Colossal isn’t the only horse in the field that is looking to keep his record on the turf unblemished. Todd Pletcher trained Element is looking to go three-for-three on the grass for his career.
Joe Bravo will be aboard Souper Colossal for the first time on Sunday. The Select will be race 11 on the 12-race card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. First post at 12:50 p.m.
