Souper Colossal Excels in Tyro
Live Oak Plantation’s Souper Colossal battled with Guderian early before putting away that rival and all the rest, cruising to an impressive 3 ¾ length score in the $60,000 Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday.
With leading rider Paco Lopez in the irons, Souper Colossal stepped the five furlongs over a fast main track in :57 3/5 and returned $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10 as the odds-on favorite in the field of six 2-year-old colts and geldings. Secured Position rallied to complete the $12.80 exacta and paid $4.60 and $3. It was another seven lengths back to Reid the News, who paid $2.80 to show. The Tyro was originally scheduled to be contested on the turf.
“I thought he did everything we asked of him and he did it in a nice fashion,” said winning trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. “You have to love his pedigree. We thought he would be a win early horse and he sure is.”
A colt by War Front from the Kingmambo mare Soaring Emotions, Souper Colossal is now a perfect two-for-two having broken his maiden here on June 7. He has earned $64,800 for his connections.
