Sound Machine makes some noise in Gulfstream Park's Glitter Woman

e Five Racing Thoroughbreds’ Sound Machine ($5.80) dominated seven 3-year-old fillies to score a 6 ½-length victory in Saturday’s $75,000 Glitter Woman, completing back-to-back stakes wins for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., who saddled Island Commish for a triumph in the $100,000 Kitten’s Joy (G3) won race earlier on the Sophomore Showcase program.

The daughter of Into Mischief, who was a $500,000 purchase at the 2018 Keeneland September sale, made amends for a second-place finish behind Spanish Point in the Nov. 30 House Party Stakes at Gulfstream.

Sound Machine broke sharply to closely stalk the pace set by Sayonara Baby, who set fractions of 22.44 and 45.39 seconds for the first half mile of the 6 ½-furlong stakes.  The Joseph Jr. trainee moved to the lead entering the stretch and power away to a convincing victory under Tyler Gaffalione.

“She trained much more forwardly for this race. I knew she was going to improve, but I didn’t know how she was going to handle 6 ½ [furlongs] and she handled it well,” Joseph Jr. said. “Tyler gave her a perfect trip. He worked her on Sunday and he was very confident. He came back and he was like, ‘Wow.’ He rode her with confidence and she ran that way.”

Sayonara Baby held second under Luis Saez 1 ½ lengths ahead of Spanish Point, who had won her two previous career starts.

Sound Machine ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:17.35 to win her second race from four career starts, which included an 8 ¼-length debut romp, a sixth in a Keeneland allowance, a second in the House Party.

“It was very impressive to see her do that, kind of like how she won first time out. We’ve kind of never really had her perfect since her first start,” said Joseph, who mentioned the Forward Gal (G3) Feb. 2 as a possible next-out for the Kentucky-bred filly. “She always looked a little sulky on us and she’s turned the corner now since her last race. She’s obviously an expensive purchase and it’s good to get a stakes win and hopefully we can win a graded-stakes down the line with her.”
