Longshot Soul Candy, under a perfectly-timed ride by jockey Tyler Baze, overhauled 5-2 favored Tripitaka in the final sixteenth to win the featured $57,000 Cystic Fibrosis Purse today at Del Mar.

Soul Candy, a California-bred four-year-old owned by EZ Eight Racing Stable and Madera Thoroughbreds and trained by Paddy Gallagher, tallied by a length in 2:14.67 for the marathon distance of a mile three-eighths over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Tripitaka, piloted by Joel Rosario, was a length in front of third-place Scorpion Time in the field of eight older Thorougbreds. Katie's Dan was fourth.

Soul Candy, a son of Birdonthewire, returned $19.20, $8 and $5.40 for his upset victory,  third in eight career races. Tripitaka paid $4.40 and $3.60, while Scorpion Time paid $4.60 to show.

On an afternoon dominated by strongly-supported favorites, there were 219 perfect tickets in the Pick Six, each worth $3,024.20. A carryover of $164,721 from Wednesday's opening-day program was supplemented by $898,490 wagered today for a total Pick Six pool of $1,063,211.
