Sorority Field Includes Save Rock and Roll

A field of eight 2-year-old fillies will travel six furlongs in Sunday’s $75,000 Sorority Stakes, including the impressive debut winner Save Rock and Roll, who will be making her second start in Monmouth’s top race for juvenile fillies.

“She really impressed us in her debut,” said trainer Joe Orseno, who conditions the runner for Crush Racing and DJ Stable LLC.  “Two works before her debut she really woke up.  I was surprised she paid so much ($55.20).”

After sitting mid-pack in her first out on Aug. 2, Save Rock and Roll swung wide around the turn before uncorking a furious stretch run that saw her report home a nearly five length winner over the sloppy main track.

“I certainly wouldn’t mind if it rained,” Orseno said.  “I guess the biggest concern would be how she does over a fast track, but she should handle it just find.  She breaks from the one hole, but she’s raced already, so that’s not much of a concern.  She’ll sit back and come with her run just like last time.”

A $50,000 sales purchase earlier this year, Save Rock and Roll is by Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver from the Service Stripe mare Miss Mary Pat.  She’s been installed the 4-1 third choice on the morning line by oddsmaker Brad Thomas, behind Perpetual Novena (5-2), runner-up in the Colleen Stakes last out, and Coco’s Wildcat (3-1), a stakes winner at Gulfstream.

The Sorority, which will be renewed for the 60th time, goes as race nine on Sunday’s 12-race program.
