Soothsay skips Del Mar's Torrey Pines, headed to G1 Cotillion
Soothsay, winner of this year's Santa Anita Oaks (G2) and Indiana Oaks (G3) for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, was not entered Wednesday for this weekend's $100,000 Torrey Pines (G3) at Del Mar as had been a possibility. Instead, the lightly-raced filly will head straight to the $1 million Cotillion (G1) at Parx on Sept. 25.
"It came up a little quick for her," Mandella said of the one-mile Torrey Pines going a flat mile.
Earlier Wednesday, Soothsay drilled a half mile in 48.0 seconds at Del Mar, which was the third-fastest of 25 works at the distance. It was Soothsay's third work since the July 7 Indiana Oaks (G3). At Indiana Grand, the daughter of Distorted Humor overcame a horrendous start to get up and win by a neck under Flavien Prat.
The Cotillion, first run in 1969, is back on the racing calendar this year after last year's edition was canceled due to COVID.
Soothsay has a record of 4: 3-1-0 with earnings of $431,800 for owner-breeder Raydelz Stable. She won her debut at Santa Anita in February and came right back to win the Santa Anita Oaks (G2). Prior to her trip to Indiana, she was second in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) to Crazy Beautiful, who is among the leading contenders in this Saturday's $600,000 Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.
