Snowday goes back into stakes company for the first time in nearly a year and a half when he takes on nine opponents in this Sunday’s $60,000 Wolf Hill Stakes, going five and a half furlongs on the Monmouth Park turf.
The 6-year-old gelding by Falco out of the Forest Wildcat mare Oceanique is exiting a win in a $30,000 allowance optional claiming event at Monmouth on June 25, that his second start off an over five month layoff. He was able to sit fourth that day, just off the early pace, before taking the lead at the top of the stretch and grabbing a three-length victory.
“He has been doing good since his win,” said J. Willard Thompson, who conditions the horse for his Quiet Winter Farm. “He galloped this morning to get ready for tomorrow (Sunday).”
Snowday has hit the board in each of his six career starts over the Monmouth Park turf with a 1-3-2 record.
Snowday hasn’t worked since his trip to the winner’s circle on June 25. His last work came on June 18 when he went four furlongs in :48 4/5 over the fast main track at Monmouth.
Victor Lebron will be aboard Snowday for the first time in his career in the Wolf Hill.
“I like the rail post for him,” said Thompson. “He seems to run his best races when he’s able to sit third or fourth and wait for an opening on the rail.”
To get back to the winner’s circle, Snowday will have to hold off Alan Goldberg’s late-charging Pool Winner, who is going for his fourth win in a row and first career victory at Monmouth Park.
Two horses are running for new conditioners for the first time, 2014 Teddy Drone and New Jersey Breeders Handicap victor Rainbow Heir, who starts for Jason Servis; and, Joe Franklin, who is now out of the barn of Gregg Sacco.
The Wolf Hill is set for race 9 on Sunday’s 10-race card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m., with first post scheduled for 12:50 p.m.
