'Small fracture' sidelines jockey Jose Ortiz for a month
Jockey Jose Ortiz, injured when thrown from his mount during a Saturday post parade at Gulfstream Park, tweeted Tuesday that he'll be out a month with a broken wrist.
"Considering all the possibilities, I am truly blessed," Ortiz tweeted.
The 2017 Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Jockey had walked first-time starter Atone out on the track for Gulfstream's third race when the 3-year-old colt began to buck. Ortiz held on initially but eventually went to the ground.
After Atone was tended to and Ortiz received a fresh set of goggles -- his snapped during the fall -- he rode Atone to a sixth-place finish. Ortiz took of from the rest of his Saturday mounts.
The incident resulted in what Ortiz called a "small fracture on the outside of my wrist." He will wear a splint the next four weeks as it heals.
"See you in a month," he tweeted, "better than ever!"
Among the events Ortiz will miss is Saturday's $20 million Saudi Cup aboard Tacitus. Trainer Bill Mott enlisted Jose Lezcano to ride the 4-year-old colt, one of five Americans in the world's richest horse race.
