Slim Shadey Kicks Clear to Win Sloppy Elkwood

David Jacobson’s Slim Shadey moved through on the inside of pacesetter Saucy Don up the backstretch before kicking away from that rival and all the rest in the lane to post a 2 3/4 length victory in the $75,000 Elkwood Stakes at Monmouth Park on Friday afternoon.

Trained by the owner, Slim Shadey returned $6 and $2.80 as the second choice in the field that scratched down to five runners after being washed off the turf.  The winner went the flat mile over a sloppy main track in 1:36 4/5. Midnight Cello completed the $17.60 exacta and paid $3.60 to place. Post-time favorite Joe Tess, checked in third. There was no show wagering offered on the Elkwood.

“He got off a little funny but it didn’t take him long to get back in the mix,” said winning jockey Chuck C. Lopez. “From then on he just pulled me around the racetrack.”

A 6-year-old gelding by Val Royal from the Chief’s Crown mare Vino Veritas, Slim Shadey has won six of his 37 lifetime starts.
