Slammy Boy Wins Churchill Downs Feature

Lucky Seven Stable’s Slammy Boy swept past odds-on favorite Harrods Creek at the head of the stretch and drew off to win Thursday’s $52,300 allowance feature for 3-year-olds and up by five lengths at Churchill Downs.

Slammy Boy was ridden by Corey Lanerie and trained by Tony Reinstedler, who saddled his fourth winner of the 13-day-old meet from four starters.

Harrods Creek, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, led the field of six through fractions of :25.57, :50.44, 1:16.86 and 1:42.86 over a sloppy main track as Lanerie kept Slammy Boy well back in fifth place. Leaving the backstretch, Lanerie began a four-wide move that put Slammy Boy on even terms with Harrods Creek at the top of the stretch.

Slammy Boy, a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Grand Slam, pulled away with no resistance from his rivals and covered the 1 ½ miles on a sloppy main track in 2:34.09. Because of rain earlier in the day, the race was taken off the Matt Winn Turf Course.

The victory was worth $31,380 and increased Slammy Boy’s earnings to $55,848 with a record of 10-2-0-1.

Slammy Boy returned $12, $4 and $3.40. Harrods Creek returned $2.60 and $2.20 and finished 12 ¼ lengths in front of Kabob, who paid $2.40 to show under Jesus Castanon.

Racing continues Friday with an 11-race “Downs After Dark” program that begins at 4:30 p.m. (all times Eastern).  A five-day Pick 6 carryover of $31,438 will encompass races 6 through 11 on the card with post time on sixth scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday’s final race is scheduled to be run at 9:36 p.m.
