Sinai back on beam at Hollywood Park
Sinai, the lesser regarded of two entrants for trainer Bob Baffert, rallied on the outside to win the $57,704 allowance feature Thursday at Hollywood Park.
Ending a five race losing streak, the 3-year-old gray son of Rockport Harbor and the Machiavellian mare Dontgetinmyway was up in the final yards to defeat 16-1 shot Chiloquin by a neck.
No better than third in 2011 before Thursday, Sinai won for the second time in three starts over Cushion Track for Zayat Stables LLC. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, the $50,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland September sale in 2009 completed the six furlongs in 1:08.82.
Saddleranch, a debut winner April 30 for Baffert and breeders Hal and Patti Earnhardt, weakened slightly to fourth as the 3-5 favorite after setting the pace in tandem with Master Chef, who wound up third at 9-2.
Sinai, who pushed his earnings to $77,022, paid $10.40, $4.60 and $8.80 as the 4-1 third choice. Chiloquin, cutting back in distance after finishing fourth in the Snow Chief Stakes April 23, returned $9.20 and $22.60 while finishing a half-length in front of Master Chef. The show price on Master Chef was $8.80.
The inflated show payoffs were because most of the money wagered in that particular pool was on Saddleranch. He attracted $24,142 of $32,029 bet to show in the race.
Completing the order of finish were Legal Separation and Al Instante.
Winning tickets in the Pick 6 were worth $107,082.80. A total of $782,709 was wagered Thursday in the Pick 6 in pursuit of a Sunday carryover of $117,269.
Racing resumes Friday. Post time is 7:05 p.m.
After the races are concluded – approximately 10:30 p.m. – a concert starring Hollywood U2 will begin at the North Park Lawn.
