Swift Thoroughbreds’ Shrug, a 9-1 outsider piloted by Victor Espinoza, barely held off the late charge of Lakerville to win today’s featured $93,600 Green Flash Handicap at five furlongs over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
Shrug, a Kentucky-bred son of Medaglia d’Oro trained by Carla Gaines, prevailed by a nose over the onrushing Lakerville, a two-time turf sprint winner at Del Mar last month who was ridden by Garrett Gomez.
Third, only a neck behind Lakerville, was Sirocco Strike, with Koast, the talented three-year-old sent postward the narrow 7-5 favorite under Rafael Bejarano, checking in a head farther back in fourth.
Shrug, whose owner is Mark Mache of Vancouver, B. C., stepped the distance in :56 flat and returned $21.40, $5.80 and $6.20. Lakerville, 8-5 second choice, paid $3.40 and $3.60, while Sirocco Strike returned $5.80 to show.
It was the fourth win in 15 starts for Shrug and first money of $53,100 increased the four-year-old’s bankroll to $190,380.
Although beaten in the Green Flash Handicap, Bejarano booted in two winners – Hooray for Hollywood in the third and Inner Groove in the fifth – to push his lead in the rider standings to six over Gomez, 32-26. Gomez blanked with six mounts, finishing second twice.
