Trainer David Fawkes scheduled an “open gallop” for Sheer Drama Sunday morning at Gulfstream Park in preparation for a possible start in the $250,000 Princess Rooney (G2), a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win & You’re In’ stakes on next Saturday’s $1.125 Million Summit of Speed program.
“She ran a little bit down the lane. She went 26 (seconds) down the lane. I just didn’t want to do much with her. She just ran,” Fawkes said. “Seeing that she just ran, I didn’t see any point in breezing her.”
Sheer Drama, a two-time Grade 1 stakes winner around two turns before finishing a troubled fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff last year, made a victorious 2016 debut in the seven-furlong Madison (G1) April 9 at Keeneland, where she registered a neck decision over Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria. Harold Queen’s 6-year-old homebred mare subsequently finished third in the La Troienne (G1) at Churchill Downs May 6 and fifth in the Ogden Phipps (G1) at Belmont June 1. Both races were run at 1 1/16 miles.
The winner of the seven-furlong Princess Rooney will earn a fees-paid berth in the Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Nov. 5.
“I haven’t decided yet. I’m going to wait, give her a day, to decide. We don’t have to enter until Wednesday,” Fawkes said. “It’s kind of close off the other race, so I haven’t decided yet. I’ll talk to Mr. Queen.”
Fawkes-trained Perfect Kay, an impressive debut winner at Gulfstream Park June 3, breezed a half-mile Sunday in 47.49 seconds. The Stonestreet Stables’ daughter of Kantharos is nominated for Saturday’s $75,000 Cassidy, a 5 ½-furlong stakes for 2-year-old fillies on the nine-stakes Summit of Speed card.
First race post for Saturday's Summit of Speed will be 12:45 p.m.
