Sexton Mile leads 6 Memorial Day stakes at Lone Star
The Grade 3, $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile leads six stakes races on the Lone Star Park card on Memorial Day.
The track, midway between Dallas and Fort Worth, has attracted leading jockeys such as Florent Geroux, Victor Espinoza and Rey Gutierrez.
California-based Shaaz, a 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo who went 3-for-3 under former trainer Bob Baffert, will make his first start for Sean McCarthy. He will break from Post 8 with Geroux aboard.
Also shipping from California is Elector, who is 2-for-2 this year for John Sadler. The 4-year-old Constitution colt drew Post 5 and will be ridden by Espinoza.
Another familiar name is Rated R Superstar, who will break from Post No. 1 with Gutierrez in the irons. The 9-year-old came off a four-month break and raced once each month at Oaklawn this year, winning the Essex (G3) and the listed Fifth Season.
The Sexton Mile is the 12th and final race on the card, with a post time of 8:35 p.m. EDT.
The $300,000 Texas Derby, the 11th race, features several familiar runners from the Kentucky Derby trail. They include Strike Hard (fourth in the Sam F. Davis, G3, and seventh in the Florida Derby, G1); Win the Day (fifth in the Santa Anita Derby, G1) and A. P.'s Secret (seventh in the Fountain of Youth, G2, and fourth in the Wood Memorial, G2).
