With three victories from four starts on Santa Anita’s unique downhill turf course at about 6 ½ furlongs, On the Backstreets qualifies as the personification of a “horse for course.”
Peter Miller hopes the chestnut filly continues her penchant for the venue when she runs in Saturday’s Grade III, $100,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes for fillies and mares, 3 and up.
“It’s a quick turnaround, but she loves the downhill,” the trainer said. “She bounced out of her last race (ninth in the one-mile Autumn Miss Stakes on Oct. 25) really well, so we’re taking a shot. We’ve got nowhere to run at Del Mar, so we either sit on her until Santa Anita’s winter meet or run her.”
The field for the Sen. Ken Maddy, race three of 10 with a first post time of 10:15 a.m.: Judy In Disguise, Martin Garcia, 10-1; Biorhythm, Drayden Van Dyke, 12-1; Stars Above Me, Irad Ortiz Jr., 8-1; Velvet Mesquite, Mike Smith, 6-1; Gender Agenda, Javier Castellano, 8-1; Richies Party Girl, Victor Espinoza, 4-1; Warm Breeze, Rafael Bejarano, 12-1; To My Valentine, Frank Dettori, 15-1; Llandudno, Corey Nakatani, 12-1; On the Backstreets, Paco Lopez, 6-1; Fanticola, Joe Talamo, 15-1; Amaranth, David Carr, 15-1; Ageless, Julien Leparoux, 5-1; and Dutchessa, Brice Blanc, 20-1.
