See the ever-changing odds for 240 Kentucky Derby candidates

Bettors trying to poach long odds on this year’s Kentucky Derby winner would be advised to make their futures plays on horses before they finish first or second in points preps.

There was no better example of that than Saturday, when Greatest Honour and Tarantino went one-two in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park, and Medina Spirit and Roman Centurian did the same in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita.

Greatest Honour not only closed to win in Florida, he shortened from a best price of 60-1 in Las Vegas futures to 16-1, making him a top five choice for May 1 at Churchill Downs. Tarantino (see below) was a surprising arrival on the Derby trail, shortening from 225-1 to a best 125-1.

Players could have gotten Medina Spirit at 60-1 before his thrilling win in California for six-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert moved him to 22-1. Roman Centurian’s narrow loss shortened him from 100-1 to 55-1.

While three of those names were already among the betting choices, Tarantino was one of the five horses that opened last week in the Derby futures at Circa Sports and at William Hill Nevada.

Crowded Trade (55-1 Circa). This deep closer by More Than Ready was an even-money winner at six furlongs in his debut Thursday at Aqueduct. He was a weanling when owner Seth Klarman bought him for $185,000. Three red flags on him are that his racing style does not translate well to recent Derby history, the New York winter is not exactly a proving ground for the classics, and trainer Chad Brown seldom gets horses to the gate at Churchill Downs let alone win the roses.

Tarantino (85-1 Circa, 125-1 William Hill). Anyone who got him at his opening Derby odds of 225-1 was buoyed by his switch from turf to dirt, which resulted in a second-place finish Saturday as a 26-1 long shot in the Holy Bull (G3). This Pioneerof the Nile colt has taken a less than a straight path onto the Triple Crown trail. He started in the barn of Bob Baffert, earning a win and a second in two races on the California grass. Then his high-profile owners led by SF Racing tried to sell him last fall. When his $240,000 reserve was not attained, he was shipped east to trainer Rodolphe Brisset. That led to a winning turf start in December at Gulfstream Park before Saturday’s encouraging move to the dirt.

Outasite (150-1 Circa, 150-1 William Hill). How deep can Brad Cox’s bench get? Add this pacesetting Outwork colt that broke his maiden Jan. 23 on his third try, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 84. He did it at odds-on going six furlongs at Oaklawn Park after two failures at Churchill Downs, once as a favorite. Outasite has as much of a history in the sales ring as he does on the track. With a winning $380,000 bid last March, Jim Rupp became his fourth owner.

Slumber Party (200-1 Circa). It is a simple question. Will Gary and Mary West run their homebred filly by Malibu Moon against the boys? Slumber Party got her career started at Gulfstream Park with a geared-down 7 1/2-length sprint victory the day after the Pegasus. Will an 88 Beyer tempt trainer Kelly Breen to look beyond the Kentucky Oaks? That might not be such a simple question.

Jirafales (350-1 Circa). He finished a distant fifth Saturday as the longest shot on the board for the Holy Bull, so his Derby futures price held firm. Trained by Gustavo Delgado, the Social Inclusion colt’s only other race was a convincing win last fall against Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park West. Oh, Jirafales? That is Spanish for giraffes. It was also the name of a character in the 1970s Mexican television comedy “El Chavo.”
