See if you recognize the 10 new names carrying Ky. Derby odds

Without even racing during the holiday weekend, Life Is Good reclaimed his place as the consensus favorite for the Kentucky Derby.

Not only was he the shortest-priced individual horse, at 7-1, in the latest Churchill Downs pari-mutuel pool, his 8-1 best price in Nevada’s fixed-odds futures put him ahead of his Bob Baffert stablemate Concert Tour (10-1) and last year’s juvenile champion Essential Quality (12-1).

Beneath them, William Hill Nevada and Circa Sports continued to remove the lingering choices that no longer look like Derby contenders. William Hill has dropped 46 horses and Circa 19 since last weekend.

Yet new names continue to be added. If Justify’s Feb. 18 debut in 2018 is the benchmark for how late a Derby contender may make a credible debut, there is not much time left for new horses. Ten showed up in Nevada futures for the first time in the last week.

Rebel’s Romance (85-1 Circa). It is that time of the season when the buzz from the Middle East grows louder. This homebred Godolphin gelding by Dubawi is 3-for-3, all at a mile. He won twice against novice competition last fall on the synthetic track at Kempton, England. Last month he closed from next to last to win by a head in the UAE 2,000 Guineas Trial on the Meydan dirt. He is expected to start Saturday in the $1.5 million Saudi Derby on the Saudi Cup undercard. Trainer Charlie Appleby then could run Rebel’s Romance through next month’s UAE Derby (G2) to try to qualify for Kentucky.

O Besos (100-1 Circa). Sired by 2013 Derby winner Orb, he outpunched his weight finishing fourth as a 21-1 long shot in the Risen Star. Going two turns, though, might have been too much for this Barrett Bernard homebred colt trained by Greg Foley. His first-time rider Marcelino Pedroza took O Besos on a wide trip Saturday and found none of the late kick that Brian Hernandez Jr. got out of him in a pair of sprint victories.

Mouheeb (110-1 Circa). Based at Dubai, this Flatter colt owned by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum made up ground in the stretch to win the Feb. 4 running of the UAE 2,000 Guineas (G3). Trained by Nicholas Bachalard, he got a head in front at the wire and was clocked at a stakes-record 1:36.46 (no run-up) for the Meydan dirt mile. Mouheeb’s only loss in three starts was to Rebel’s Romance in the Guineas Trial. He, too, could be aimed for the UAE Derby.

Defeater (125-1 Circa, 125-1 William Hill). A slow start and a seven-wide trip over the last quarter-mile contributed to his half-length loss Saturday as the 2-1 favorite in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race at the Fair Grounds. The $210,000 Union Rags colt had been cross-entered in the Risen Star, but trainer Tom Amoss decided it was too soon for his maiden-sprint winner to test graded-stakes company.

Democracy (125-1 Circa). Not to be confused with the Baffert-trained gelding Democrat, this Quality Road colt from the Todd Pletcher barn was a first-out winner in the slop at Gulfstream Park. As a 6-1 long shot he overcame being one of the last out of the gate, stalked the pace and won by a nose in a Feb. 6 sprint. WinStar Farm spent $400,000 to buy a controlling share of Tami Bobo’s homebred when he was a yearling.

Promise Keeper (125-1 William Hill). Another Pletcher prospect, he broke his maiden on his second try about 90 minutes after Democracy won on the same sloppy track at Gulfstream. Carrying odds of 6-1, the $160,000 Constitution colt led the whole one-turn mile and finished first by five lengths. It was a marked improvement over his distant fourth-place finish going six furlongs on a fast track last month.

Run Classic (125-1 Circa). As the 8-5 favorite in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race, he took the lead on the far turn and ran off to a 3 1/4-length victory Saturday at the Fair Grounds. It was a cleaner ride for Brian Hernandez Jr. than last month, when the $475,000 Runhappy colt trained by Bret Calhoun got into a bumpy, backstretch duel with the eventual winner of his six-furlong debut.

Carillo (200-1 Circa). Sold for $875,000 last month in the dispersal of the Paul Pompa estate, this Union Rags colt jumped into the Risen Star in his first start for trainer Tom Amoss. At 21-1, he finished 10th in a field of 11. It proved too big a leap from a maiden mile victory for Chad Brown last month at Aqueduct.

Rightandjust (350-1 Circa). He set the pace early in the Risen Star only to fade away in the stretch and finish sixth. Claimed in December for $50,000, it was a cold dose of reality for the Awesome Again colt that had won two route races in a row by a combined 8 1/2 lengths before he found himself outclassed Saturday.

Sermononthemount (400-1 Circa). The two-time sprint winner was trying stakes company for the second time Saturday in the Risen Star. His non-competitive eighth-place finish showed bettors they had it right when they made him a 196-1 long shot. The Tale of Ekati colt has lost his two stakes starts by a combined 29 1/2 lengths. Consider this: If Sermononthemount somehow were to win the Derby, a bettor putting $10 on him at 400-1 would pocket more than the colt’s auction price last year of just $3,500.
