See how weekend wins have impact on Breeders’ Cup odds

Essential Quality’s grind-it-out victory Saturday against Midnight Bourbon in the Grade 1 Travers made an impact in futures betting for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Out to turn his 2020 Eclipse Award into a collection this year, the 3-year-old star of Brad Cox’s stable shortened from 5-1 to 4-1 to win the $6 million race on Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

Following are the current Bovada futures (with last Monday’s odds in parentheses):

Turf

Gufo’s narrow win in the 1 1/2-mile Sword Dancer (G1) on Saturday at Saratoga thrust her into the Turf futures. Trained by Christophe Clément, he opened at 9-1. After losing the race by only a neck, Ireland-based Japan vaulted from 20-1 to 9-1. Tribhuvan, who was fourth in the Sword Dancer, moved into the futures at 12-1.

Distaff

The odds stayed mostly steady for the second week in a row for the Distaff. The only move was a shortening for Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Malathaat, going from 6-1 to 11-2 more than a week after her win at Saratoga in the Alabama (G1).

Mile

Even though he is 4-for-4 in 2021 with three Group 1 victories in Europe, the favorite Palace Pier saw his odds to win the Mile go from 8-5 to 9-5 (actually plus-185). Mo Forza’s triumph Aug. 21 in the Del Mar Mile (G2) finally resonated with his move from 20-1 to 9-1.

Sprint

Jackie’s Warrior won Saturday’s H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) at Saratoga, and that made him the outright favorite to win the Sprint, one of two divisions in which he carries the shortest price (see Dirt Mile). While he went from 6-1 to 5-1, Yaupon moved from 8-1 to 6-1 after his score in the Forego (G1). Thanks to his Pat O’Brien (G2) victory Saturday at Del Mar, Ginóbili opened in the Sprint futures at 7-1.

  5-1   (6-1) Jackie’s Warrior

  6-1   (6-1) Nashville

  6-1   (8-1) Yaupon

Filly & Mare Turf

The only change in the odds for the Filly & Mare Turf was the shortening of Gufo from 12-1 to 9-1. A bet on the Sword Dancer winner for this race would be ill-advised. Gufo is ineligible, because he is not a she.

  9-4   (9-4) Snowfall

11-4 (11-4) Santa Barbara

  4-1   (4-1) Loves Only You

Dirt Mile

Jerkens winner Jackie’s Warrior has the distinction of being favored in two Breeders’ Cup divisions. His Saratoga triumph shortened him from 5-1 to 3-1 to win the Dirt Mile. The Sprint seems the more likely landing place for him because this race will be run at Del Mar around two turns, which have proven to be the colt’s undoing. By finishing a close second in the Jerkens, Life Is Good opened at 13-4 (plus-325) to win the Dirt Mile.

  3-1   (5-1) Jackie’s Warrior

14-1 (14-1) Fulsome

14-1 (14-1) Jesús’ Team

Turf Sprint

The odds did not change for the five-furlong Turf Sprint. Golden Pal, who won the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland, is still the 3-1 favorite coming off his seventh-place finish in the Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) on Aug. 20 at York, England.

  3-1   (3-1) Golden Pal

  8-1   (8-1) Kimari

  9-1   (9-1) Starman

12-1 (12-1) Fast Boat

25-1 (25-1) Sombeyay

25-1 (25-1) Supremacy

Filly & Mare Sprint

Gamine has become the shortest-priced favorite in the Breeders’ Cup futures. Her triumph Saturday in the Ballerina (G1) at Saratoga moved her from 2-1 to even money to repeat as the winner of the Filly & Mare Sprint, the race that started her current five-race winning streak.

  1-1   (2-1) Gamine

  5-2   (5-2) Bella Sofia

13-2 (13-2) Ce Ce

  8-1   (8-1) Souper Sensational
