Can opinions whipsaw so much on Life Is Good that the net effect is … nothing?

His Sham Stakes (G3) victory Saturday looked a lot like another Bob Baffert-trained horse. Authentic held on for dear life to win last year’s Haskell (G1) in a performance that was both criticized and rationalized all the way to his 8-1 triumph in the Kentucky Derby.

Here we go again.

While his 3/4-length, hang-on win at Santa Anita brought out questions about his endurance, Life Is Good was still rewarded with a Beyer Speed Figure of 101.

How did Las Vegas react to all this?

Meh.

After flashing briefly at 8-1 (actually +850) in the Kentucky Derby futures book at Circa Sports, he went right back to 9-1 (+950). William Hill Nevada never moved him, holding him at 8-1, the same as idle Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality.

All the while, Life Is Good remains the consensus futures favorite not only in Nevada but around the world. He is 7-1 offshore at Bovada. Among the three British bookmakers that Oddschecker.com says are booking the Derby, Life Is Good is best priced at 12-1, the same as Essential Quality.

Life Is Good’s stablemate Medina Spirit, who finished a hard-charging second Saturday, attracted enough betting interest that his odds were shortened significantly. Circa cut him from 75-1 to 50-1, William Hill from 100-1 to 40-1.

Parnelli’s third-place finish as the second betting choice in the Sham drifted him from 200-1 to 100-1 at Circa and 100-1 to 90-1 at William Hill.

Two other prep winners were shortened in the Derby futures. Capo Kane went from 200-1 to 70-1 at Circa after finishing first Friday in the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct. Mutasaabeq’s triumph Saturday in the Mucho Macho Man at Gulfstream may not have had any qualifying points attached, but he went from 85-1 to 60-1 at Circa and 75-1 to 50-1 at William Hill.
