Second Calumet entry, Bandua, could run in Belmont Stakes 2018
A representative of owner Calumet Farm confirmed Wednesday that Bandua, a Kentucky-bred, Irish-trained son of The Factor is an “outside possibility” to run in the 2018 Belmont Stakes.
Conditioned by Dermot Weld, who won the Belmont in 1990 with Go And Go, Bandua is 2-for-2 running overseas on the turf.
Whether Weld ships the colt to the states, Calumet should be represented in the June 9 race with Bravazo, who was a fast-closing second on Triple Crown hopeful Justify in last Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.
Calumet sends its overseas charges to both Weld and Joseph O’Brien, son of the great trainer Aidan O’Brien.
Bandua is out of Seattle Slew mare If Angels Sang and sold for $150,000 as a weanling in Keeneland’s November sale.
Last out, he faced just three rivals but won May 5 going 10 furlongs on soft turf at Ireland’s Cork Racecourse. According to AtTheRaces.com, Weld called Bandua “just a lovely big, improving colt” after that performance. The gray or roan colt made his racing debut April 15.
Bandua is also a candidate to run June 30 in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, a 12-furlong event at the Curragh Racecourse.
