Sent to the post as the 2-5 favorite, Amarish broke
alertly, but was quickly joined by the longshot Strong Wind to his outside. The
two separated themselves from the field by three lengths and flew through an
opening quarter of 21.81 and a half mile in :45.70. Meanwhile, jockey Joe Talamo wisely
kept Scherer Magic out of the fray, four lengths behind. Through the stretch,
the two pace setters, worn from their earlier duel, were quickly passed by a
strong running Scherer Magic who drew off to a 2 ½ length score, getting six
furlongs in 1:11.67. Carson's Crown and
Just Call Me
Al got into stride late and settled
for minor prizes.
Before his debut, SCHERER MAGIC (Doneraile Court
- She's a Nasty One, by Touch Gold) had
been tearing up the track in the mornings and had caught the eye of a few
trainers. After winning his debut over
maiden claimers by 7 ¼ lengths, the Iowa-bred gelding was claimed and moved to
the barn of John
Sadler, where he continued to work strongly. On Saturday, Scherer Magic rewarded his
connections with a 2 ½ length score in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship.
Scherer Magic has a fairly modest pedigree. His sire Doneraile
Court, a son of Seattle Slew, showed promise as a two year old, winning the G-3
Nashua Stakes. The following year, he placed in the Holy Bull and the Tampa Bay
Derby, but failed to his the board in the Fountain of Youth (G-1) or Derby
Trial Stakes. Skipping the Triple Crown
trail, Doneraile Court showed up for a second place finish in the Dwyer. He was
off the board in the King’s Bishop (G-1) but finally scored with a head victory
in the Jerome Stakes (G-2). He retired
at the end of his three year old season with a 16-6-3-2 ($361,410) record.
Scherer Magic’s dam She's a Nasty One was unplaced in her
only start. She’s a young broodmare and her only other offspring is Scherer
Magic’s full sister Moma Loca, who recently won a claiming race at Prairie
Meadows. Scherer Magic’s second dam She’s A Lively One placed in the Arlington-Washington
Lassie (G-1) at two and a listed stakes at age four. She’s A Lively One has produced stakes winner
Shesgoldincolor, a full sister to She's a Nasty One and stakes placed A Song In
A Minor (by Quiet American). Another daughter bore stakes winner Lord Avalon.
Scherer Magic has a smooth gait with good leg extension. He has
a strong closing kick, but drifted slightly in the stretch, due to the left
handed whip. Overall, he appears to be a professional gelding. The Best Pal Stakes (G-1) at 6 ½ furlongs on
August 5 would be the next logical step for Scherer Magic. The gelding should handle distances up to a
mile without difficulty and 1 1/16 miles should also be within his scope.
Of
concern may be how the Hollywood Juvenile Champ handles the Del Mar Polytrack. Since 2009, his sire Donraile Court has been
represented by 9 runners at Del Mar, with one win and two placings. Overall,
sons of Seattle Slew aren’t known as good producers of synthetic track
runners. Still, each individual should
be assessed on his own merits. Keep an eye on Scherer Magic’s morning works if
he moves to the seaside track. If he breezes as well or better than he did at Hollywood
Park, then he could be live at Del Mar.
