Sawyer's Hill marches to impressive turf route win at Santa Anita

Sawyer’s Hill made an easy lead and marched to an impressive one length triumph under Martin Pedroza in Thursday’s $63,000 Santa Anita allowance feature. Trained by Kristin Mulhall, the 6-year-old horse by Spring At Last negotiated one mile on turf in 1:34.36.
A gate to wire winner for $75,000 claiming at a mile on turf Feb. 26, Sawyer’s Hill was off at 7-2 in a field of seven older horses and paid $9.00, $5.20 and $3.80.
Owned by Red Castle Farms, Sawyer’s Hill chalked up his fifth win from 17 career starts and with the winner’s check of $37,800, he increased his earnings to $321,280.
Fabozzi, who finished well while not threatening the winner, finished second, a half length in front of Ward ’n Jerry. Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Fabozzi was off at 3-1 and paid $4.40 and $3.20.
Breaking from the rail with Stewart Elliott, Ward ’n Jerry was off at 5-1 and paid $4.00 to show.
Brazilian-bred Ohio, who was favored at 5-2, was a close fourth turning for home but tired badly through the drive to finish sixth under Tiago Pereira.

Fractions on the race were 23.34, 46.98, 1:10.76 and 1:22.56.
