Saucy Don Returns in Reilly Handicap

It’s been nearly eight months since Saucy Don has raced against rivals, but if morning works are any indication of his readiness, he could prove very tough in Saturday’s $60,000 John J. Reilly Handicap.

“We just got him at the beginning of May,” said Terri Pompay, who trains the colt for Patricia Generazio.  “He came in looking good and ready to go.  His works have been fantastic.  He’s all businesslike, very professional.”

Those works include a four-furlong bullet on May 8, going :49 in the mud and a 1:01 3/5 bullet for five furlongs on May 22, that over a racetrack labeled “good.”

“There’s nothing quite like getting a race into him,” Pompay said.  “You’d always like to have one, but if he runs the way he works, he’ll be alright.”

A homebred son of Don Six from the Belong to Me mare Saucy Broad, Saucy Don has raced 11 times, all at Monmouth Park.  From those starts, he sports a record of 3-3-3, good for earnings of $144,165.

In Saturday’s six-furlong Reilly, Saucy Don will break from post nine with jockey Gabriel Saez in the irons.  Last season that duo teamed to win a pair of races.

The Reilly, which has drawn a field of 10, goes as the 10th race on an 11 race program.  Among those entered are last year’s Reilly winner Hop Skip and Away and Grade 3 winner Rainbow Heir, who took the 2013 Jersey Shore Stakes.
