Nearly two months after finishing second to Eclipse Award candidate Modern Games in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland, Shirl’s Speight returned to the track Saturday morning.
The soon-to-be 7-year-old Speightstown horse was clocked at 50.4 seconds going a half-mile at Payson Park in Florida.
Trainer Roger Attfield had not yet said where the winner of the 2022 Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) might race next.

There were 24 graded-stakes winners who had timed works on New Year’s Eve.
Shirl’s Speight (Speightstown), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Maker’s Mark Mile), worked four furlongs in 50.4 seconds at Payson Park on Saturday morning. It was the 58th fastest of 79 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race.
