Saratoga: 2-year-old Setting Sun is euthanized after race injury
During Wednesday's running of race 9 at Saratoga, the Miguel Clement-trained Setting Sun was pulled up by jockey Flavien Prat in the stretch run with an injury to the left front. The 2-year-old filly was immediately attended to by on-track veterinarians, who transported Setting Sun to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital for further evaluation.
Radiographs performed at Rood & Riddle showed severe fractures to the left knee, which were deemed to be inoperable. As a result, and upon recommendation of the attending veterinarians, Setting Sun was humanely euthanized Wednesday evening.
Setting Son was making her first start for owner Barry Schwartz in the 5 1/2-furlong race on turf. Bred by Stonewall Farm, she was sired by Caravaggio and was out of the More than Ready mare Sparkling Sky.
Since the beginning of the Saratoga summer meet July 10, there have been two equine fatalities, Setting Sun and Aterradora, during racing and two equine fatalities during training, National Secret and Dazzle d’Oro.
