Saratoga 2024:Domestic Product wins Jerkens in a thriller
Domestic Product outlasted favorite Prince of Monaco in a thrilling stretch duel to earn his first Grade 1 victory in the $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds at Saratoga on Saturday.
With Flavien Prat in the irons, Domestic Product settled in mid-pack before launching his bid leaving the turn and outrunning Prince of Monaco to the wire. Domestic Product, trained by Chad Brown, completed seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:21.71 following fractions of 22.04 and 44.28 seconds for the opening half mile.
Prince of Monaco, who invaded from California for trainer Bob Baffert, took the lead at the top of the stretch under John Velazquez but could not hold off the winner. Listed as the 4-1 second choice on the morning line, Prince of Monaco was bet down to 2-1 favoritsm.
Domestic Product, who races as a homebred for Klaravich Stables, was cutting back to one turn following a win in the one-mile Dwyer Stakes (G3) July 6 at Aqueduct. The Practical Joke colt also this year won the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) in March.
